Canada Pension Plan – Disability Benefits
New Return to Work Incentive

In early 2005, Canada Pension Plan implemented a new regulation to help clients return to work. With the new “automatic reinstatement”, clients will face less barriers and more incentives to leave CPP-D to explore work opportunities.

The highlights of Automatic Reinstatement include:

  • Your disability must re-occur within 2 years of stopping your CPP-D benefits for a return to work
  • Your request for reinstatement must be made in writing within 12 months of the date you were incapable again of working
  • You must provide information and evidence to support your request for reinstatement including a statement from your physician
  • You must be seeing reinstatement for the same disability or medical reason (or related condition) that you were originally adjudicated and granted on. To be eligible your disability must be severe and prolonged preventing you from doing any kind of job. Note that you must meet the definition of disability as it exists today
  • You are not required to have made minimum earnings or contributions to CPP during the 2 years
  • Your rate of monthly entitlement will be re-calculated to include your new contributions during your period of employment
  • If reinstated, Children’s Benefit will also be reinstated
